The story of The Hudson Ice House

Anna and Dan bought the property in October of 2018 from the estate of a former wall street broker and horse aficionado. He was born in Morocco and moved to Spain in his youth. From there, he eventually moved to the United States, and lived in New York City.

Upon seeing the meadows, willow, and pond, and beautifully proportioned original house, with gabled roofs, and old pine floors, they were in love. They knew it was more than they wanted to take on, but couldn’t see it any other way.

Dan, Principal of Bowerbird Architects, in Brooklyn, NY, just about rebuilt this 19th century Ice house and addition, on a 25 acre, former apple farm. The addition put on by a former owner in the 1990’s, but everything was in complete disrepair. We removed the middle section where the front porch was, and put in a kitchen. Then we added a roof-deck above, with outdoor shower, and views of the pond, landscape, and Catskill Mountains, accessed by an interior bridge from the big loft. What was the original kitchen of the house became the master bath, with walk-in wet room and vaulted ceiling. Huge, custom windows, maximize the light, and take advantage of the views.
